An Aerial View Painting Inspired by Spain

My latest painting began live at a special event at Will Leather Goods in Venice on Nov. 22, 2014 (see that story HERE). Since then, this piece has evolved dramatically and my progress and the final painting are presented below. This one has been a wild ride and way more challenging than I anticipated. Sometimes it goes that way, but the education en route is well worth it!

It was inspired by my window seat view of the Spanish countryside moments before landing at Aeropuerto Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas. Beginning with Madrid, the places I visited and the things I saw on that trip opened the door to a change in painting style and sharpened my focus on subjects important to me.

Scenes from Art Night in Venice

I joined forces with Will Leather Goods at their flagship Venice store for their inaugural "Art Night" on November 22. Special thanks to Tim Chan and the Will staff for hosting me, and to all the friends who made it a fun and special evening of art and fashion.

The exhibition included over a dozen cloudscape and aerial view paintings from my Aero Series PLUS a live, in-store demo of me painting the latest in the series. Enjoy scenes from "Art Night" @ Will Leather Goods here:

Something exciting is happening in there! The view of Will from world famous Abbot Kinney Blvd.
Aero No. 33 (Mountainscape) greeted visitors to Art Night.
It was a lot of fun integrating my paintings throughout the store. Here's Aero No. 6 hanging out behind the counter.

Spreading it on thick! I made the switch from painting with brushes to exclusively using palette knives about 1 1/2 years ago and haven't looked back since.
Getting extra encouragement from my fiancé, Rachel.
The base colors are all there. Will have to finish this one up in private in the studio. Stay tuned!

The End of An Era, The Start of a New

Moving. What can I say?

Beyond the physical and mental challenge of moving, my studio relocation from 6th Street to the new one at Hill Street was surprisingly emotional. So much history, so much change in my style and approach, so much new art conceived and made there. It affected me deeply. As I begin to establish the new workspace on Hill Street, I wanted to take a moment to pay tribute to the one I've called my artistic home the past 6 years.

Getting ready to transition the studio from work mode to gallery mode for an open studio event in 2012.

Inside The Artist Studio: Howard Gladstone

Meet Howard Gladstone (www.howardgladstone.net).

Howard is a talented painter, sculptor and filmmaker. His current studio is located at the Brooklyn Army Terminal. Of all the artists I know, I have known him the longest. He was the monitor of my first sculpture class at the Art Student's League of NY in January 2001. He was as generous then as he is now with his knowledge. And patient. Very patient...especially with a fledgling sculptor like me who had no shortage of questions as I was just starting my creative journey.

Howard's use of color in his landscapes…vibrant, striking hues, is remarkable.
Howard's Studio. Artist John Chandler stopped by for a visit, too.
Hard to believe it was almost 13 years ago that Howard helped me get started. Many thanks for that and the visit!

Inside The Artist Studio: David Kenneth Gordon

Meet David Gordon (www.davidkgordonart.com).

David's studio is on Riverside Drive in the Upper West Side. We met at the International School of Art in Umbria, Italy during the summer of 2001 and have kept in touch ever since. Classically trained, David is still investigating and pushing the envelope of the tools (and now technologies) available to artists today.

Some day I want a display wall like this one!
Getting to learn more about his iterative printing/drawing/painting process.
In his element! A great studio space.
A studio visit and lunch with David Gordon is a must anytime I'm in NYC!

Inside The Artist Studio: David Keeton

Meet David Keeton. His studio is in Midtown on 31st Street. He shared a project that really blew my mind. Incredibly, he figured out a way to draw an intricate line pattern across 8 sheets of paper that measures 1 kilometer long if you straightened it out.

Zooming in...
Close up. The impetus/concept behind this, and how he figured out HOW to execute it, literally blew my mind.
