Meet Howard Gladstone (www.howardgladstone.net).

Howard is a talented painter, sculptor and filmmaker. His current studio is located at the Brooklyn Army Terminal. Of all the artists I know, I have known him the longest. He was the monitor of my first sculpture class at the Art Student's League of NY in January 2001. He was as generous then as he is now with his knowledge. And patient. Very patient...especially with a fledgling sculptor like me who had no shortage of questions as I was just starting my creative journey.

Howard's use of color in his landscapes…vibrant, striking hues, is remarkable.

And The Winner of the Reyes Travel Photo Challenge Is…

There was not A winner, but TWO winners of the Reyes Travel Photo Challenge, a social media event (#reyestravelart) where fans submitted work that I would ultimately paint. For their trouble? Oh nothing, just a free print of the winning image on canvas. After a hiatus, and with many more new fans, maybe it's time to host the Reyes Travel Art Challenge, Part II?

THE BACKSTORY

In April, I invited readers of my newsletter, followers on Instagram, and fans on Facebook to the Reyes Fine Art "Travel Photo Challenge". The winner of the contest would get a free print reproduction of an original artwork I create based on travel-inspired photos they shoot and submit. The artwork I create will become welcome additions to my "Aero Series" (www.aeroscapeart.com). 

The response was overwhelming and it was so much fun fielding your questions and seeing the photos roll in to my inbox! Here's a visual look at my process to go from 60+ submission to a winner:

On the first pass, I was able to narrow 60+ photos down to these 30 images. Decisions, decisions!

Getting from 30 to these 6 was incredibly challenging. I was focusing on colors that suit my Aero Series palette, and dynamic compositions. So many could have made the top 6!

After narrowing down to the 6 semifinalists, I took a week to think things over. Ultimately, it was impossible to pick only one winner, so I chose TWO! I loved the sculptural feel and abstract quality of Carole's aerial mountainscape and the effect of the light hitting the irregular shapes in Jay's cloudscape. Congratulations to Carole, Jay and all who participated.

One Night in Laguna

Thanks to artist Fabrice Spies, Rachel and I were invited to attend the VIP Opening of the Festival of Arts in Laguna. This is Fabrice's 2nd year showing in this prestigious juried exhibition and his work did not disappoint. The gala reception had an "Old Hollywood" theme and we did our best to look the part. Great crowd, great time, great art. Way to go Fab!

Sold Out @ Sullivan Goss Gallery!

While I was sculpting away in Philadelphia (November 2011 - March 2012), I found out that four of my paintings on display at Sullivan Goss Gallery in Santa Barbara, CA all sold! It was my second year showing in the gallery's "100 Grand" Show and my first clean sweep. Some pictures of the show and the work follow:

New York City Art Explorations / 2010

Always looking! In the Greek/Roman marbles at the Metropolitan.

This whole area used to be the cafeteria...now bringing out some impressive sculptures like this one of a youthful Hercules.

I draw this same sculpture every time I visit the Met! I'd like to have one.

Looks like Napoleon shot a cannonball thru this one when he occupied Egypt.

"After Matisse Danse (I)" / Ink and whiteout on paper / 6 x 8". I approached this one by trying to draw the shapes in between the figures and their limbs instead of trying to draw the figures.

(The gentleman taking a closer look at the original had been sitting next to me for about 15 minutes as I was tackling this drawing. Not sure why, but love how this photo captures me working, an inspiring painting, and a patron in a great museum at the same time.)

Painting Raffle Winner Matt Ramage!

I hand-delivered my painting "Kanehoe Bay - View with Trees" to the office of Matt Ramage of eMarketed today. Matt was the winner of a raffle held at my most recent open studio show and the prize was this piece painted en plein air on the shores of Oahu in 2005.

Congratulations, Matt! Join me at my next one (later in 2010) and you'll have a chance to win an original Reyes, too!
